Rare in Vietnam: Town of 600 billionaires, driving cars to visit cows

October 15, 2016 08:56

In Moc Chau Farm town, there are about 600 households raising cows, all of which are now billionaires. Just thanks to raising dairy cows, the average income of households is 35-40 million VND/month, households raising large numbers can earn up to 200 million VND/month.

Profit up to 200 million/month

In contrast to the image of poverty and hardship in other mountainous communes, in Moc Chau Farm town - a district of Son La mountainous province - one sees high-rise buildings springing up side by side. The townspeople no longer ride horses or bicycles but instead ride motorbikes and buy cars.

Leading us to visit his family's dairy farm, Mr. Duong Van Noi in Moc Chau Farm town, boasted: "My family's dairy farm is about 2.4 hectares wide, raising 76 dairy cows of various types, worth about 8 billion VND."

In Moc Chau Farm town, there are currently about 600 households raising dairy cows.

Grandpa shared that life was very hard in the past, there were times when he had to work for other cow farm owners. His income was extremely unstable, sometimes he was hungry, sometimes he was full. However, since raising dairy cows, his family has started to have enough to eat. Meanwhile, the work has also become simpler thanks to the support of machines, such as cutting grass, milking machines,... only cleaning the barn, transporting milk to sell is done by human power.

Patting the buttocks of the cows with udders full of milk, Mr. Noi continued: "Currently, this herd has 30 cows that give milk, each day they milk 800 kg, which the company buys all. After deducting all expenses, it is normal for me to make a profit of several million dong."

Also one of the households that changed their lives, escaped poverty and became billionaires in Moc Chau Farm, Mr. Phan Doan Hiep in Unit 26/7, said that his farm has 120 cows, over 50 of which are giving milk. "After deducting all expenses, my family pockets about 200 million VND in profit every month," Mr. Hiep boasted.

According to Mr. Hiep, it is true that such income level is quite high, but the breeding process must always ensure the correct procedure to ensure the milk meets standards and ensures food hygiene and safety.

For example, how much green grass, imported alfalfa from the US, fermented feed, and starch do dairy cows eat a day? Cow farmers must be patient and hard-working, rain or shine, and have no holidays because the work of feeding, cleaning the barn, milking, etc. must be regular.

If cows are not milked on time, they will be as restless as humans and will even go crazy and destroy the barn. Therefore, the milking machine must be brought out at the right time, no day is an exception, Mr. Hiep said.

Changing lives thanks to dairy cows, every family buys a car

Sitting and admiring his property, Mr. Duong Van Noi shared that in this Farm town, many other families have also changed their lives thanks to dairy cows and the strong connection model between farmers and dairy businesses in Moc Chau.

Thanks to dairy cows, households here have changed their lives, becoming billionaires with an average income of 35-40 million VND/month per household.

Specifically, the company has guaranteed products, insured livestock and milk prices, supported the price of starch and American grass feed, lent 50-70% of investment capital to expand production, and supported agricultural extension. The company also gave a "hot" bonus of 500-800 VND/kg of milk if the farm achieved high milk yield and good quality. Meanwhile, livestock insurance premiums are quite high, 400,000-600,000 VND/cow/year, but when cows die and are culled, the fund will "compensate" an amount dozens of times higher.

In addition, Mr. Noi and other dairy farmers in Moc Chau Farm town also buy milk price insurance by paying 50 VND/kg of milk into the fund every time they sell to the company. If the milk price drops 30%, the insurance fund will support farmers with 60% of the reduced milk price.

"Thanks to that, dairy farmers at Moc Chau Farm never suffer losses when milk prices drop," said Mr. Noi.

Currently, Moc Chau Farm town has about 600 households raising dairy cows, small households raise about 20-30 cows, large households raise about 200 cows. On average, each household raises about 35 cows.

“Most of the cow-raising households here are billionaires, because the number of cows, if converted into money, would be worth billions,” admitted Mr. Pham Hai Nam, Deputy General Director of Moc Chau Dairy Cattle Breeding Joint Stock Company (Mocchaumilk).

Chairman of Moc Chau District People's Committee, Mr. Pham Duc Chinh, also said that many households here have an income of 40-50 million VND/month, and there are even quite a few households with an income of over 100 million VND/month or more," Mr. Chinh revealed.

“In 1991, I went to Thailand and saw that every household had a motorbike to transport milk for sale. I only wished that cow farmers in Moc Chau had a motorbike. By 2007, all households here had motorbikes. After that, I wished that they had a car. Now there are hundreds of cars,” said Mr. Tran Cong Chien, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Mocchaumilk, about the success story of the dairy farming model in Moc Chau.
