The largest bamboo flute in Vietnam

Nguyen Van Mao is playing the largest bamboo flute in Vietnam.

This bamboo flute was made by Mr. Mão himself. Initially, wanting the flute to have a deeper sound, he decided to make it 1.5 meters long.

Thinking that a 1.5-meter flute wasn't impressive enough, he decided to make one that was 2.03 meters long. This flute was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records Vietnam as the largest flute in Vietnam at the end of 2013.

To make the flute, Mão went to Xuân Lai bamboo village (Gia Bình district, Bắc Ninh province) to select bamboo. Because he wanted to make a large flute, the selection of materials had to be very meticulous, ensuring the correct size, thickness, length, and sound quality.

The flute is 2.03 meters long.

Mão said it took him four attempts to successfully make the flute. Because the flute was so large, the spacing of the holes had to be precisely aligned. For ordinary flutes, all six holes are in a straight line, but with this flute, two holes had to be offset to one side so that the hand could reach them when playing. Ordinary flutes only have one pin hole, but this flute has six pin holes for better sound projection.

The flute has been recognized by the Vietnam Book of Records Center as the largest flute in Vietnam.

Currently, only Nguyen Van Mao can play this flute skillfully. Because the flute is so large, the airflow required when blowing it must be strong enough. It takes a long time of practice and getting used to playing it. The flute still holds the record for being the largest in Vietnam.
