TASS news agency quoted a source from the press office of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on October 21 as saying that the military alliance will deploy flights of Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft in the coming weeks to monitor Syrian airspace to serve the fight against IS.

"We expect the first AWACS surveillance flights in support of the international coalition against IS to begin in the coming weeks. The AWACS aircraft will only fly in international airspace or over Turkish airspace, not over Syrian airspace. They will only conduct airspace surveillance missions and will not participate in combat missions," NATO's press office said.

The decision to deploy AWACS aircraft was made by NATO at the bloc's summit in Warsaw in July.
