Farmers in Tam Son commune, Anh Son district have started planting early winter corn, so they were not affected by the recent floods. They plan to harvest corn in about a month to sell as feed for cattle farms. |
Anh Son district has nearly 3,000 hectares of corn land, mainly in communes along the Lam River. Recently, the demand for corn for livestock feed at large cattle farms in and outside the province has increased, so Anh Son farmers have focused on growing biomass corn (corn for sale), which brings high income.
Mr. Nguyen Van Suu - Hamlet 6, Dinh Son Commune confided: His family has 6 sao of alluvial land specializing in growing corn. Last summer-autumn crop, he grew biomass corn and sold it to people for 800,000 VND/ton. It turns out that 1 sao yields 2.5 tons of plants, worth 2.2 million VND, higher than growing corn for grain before. Because of the early harvest, his family took advantage of the time to sow winter corn, and so far the corn plants have grown well.

Anh Son is a key corn production area. Although corn grain yield reaches 6 - 6.5 tons per hectare, recently many localities have switched to growing biomass corn because the income is much higher and the land exploitation cycle is faster. |
According to the data of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, this winter crop, Anh Son plans to plant 3,500 hectares of various winter crops. As for corn, up to now, the communes have planted 200 hectares, mainly biomass corn. The communes that have planted large areas of corn are: Tam Son 110 hectares, Hoi Son 20 hectares, the rest are Cam Son, Hoa Son, Duc Son.
According to the assessment of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, farmers earn 100 million VND/ha/year from growing biomass corn, while growing corn for grain only earns 60 million VND/ha/year. The reason is that growing biomass corn can rotate 4 crops/year, while growing corn for grain only produces 3 crops/year. Moreover, in recent years, biomass corn has been planted at high density, so corn yield is high.

After about 80 days of care, people cut down the whole corn plant, and cattle breeding companies come to buy it at the field. |
Because biomass corn cultivation is highly profitable, in the spring of 2017, Anh Son district plans to plant 2,600 hectares of corn, including 300 hectares of biomass corn. To support people in increasing their income from corn cultivation, Anh Son district People's Committee proactively invited TH Milk Company and a beef cattle company in Ha Tinh to coordinate and agree on a plan to purchase corn from farmers.
