A Royal Navy spokesman confirmed the information. It is understood that the group of eight Russian ships was en route to Syria at the time. The spokesman also affirmed that the Russian Navy ships had “behaved very appropriately” including calling the coast guard stations in advance.

Britain has dispatched destroyers HMS Richmond and HMS Duncan to closely monitor the Russian group.

NATO has recognized Russia's right to operate in international waters.

The Russian group, which includes the nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Veliky and the destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov, was also monitored by Norwegian warships and aircraft as it passed through the Nordic country's territorial waters before approaching Britain.

Previously, on September 21, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that the destroyer Admiral Kuznetsov would be sent to the eastern Mediterranean to strengthen forces.
