Noting that this was his first time chairing a press conference as Prime Minister, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his joy at meeting the press with the expectation that the press would continue to contribute to the country's development and enhance Vietnam's position.
The Prime Minister said that Vietnam will host the "3 in 1" conference (the 7th ACMECS, 8th CLMV and WEF-Mekong).
The WEF-Mekong Conference is an initiative of Vietnam supported by the WEF and the Mekong countries. This is the first time the WEF has organized a conference specifically for the Mekong region.
“These three conferences were very successful,” the Prime Minister acknowledged, saying that success was reflected in a number of aspects.
That is, never before has the conference had such a large number of participants as this time, including leaders of related countries. This time, Vietnam has a new initiative to invite development partners to participate from the beginning to the end of the events such as the World Bank (WB), the United Nations, the Asian Development Bank (ADB). In addition, there are large corporations of the WEF and countries in the region, including many Vietnamese enterprises. Along with that, there are also ambassadors and chargé d'affaires in Hanoi participating in the ACMECS and CLMV conferences.
“At this conference, we have put forward many new and stronger policies and measures such as green growth and inclusive growth, to strive to build a people-oriented society and respond more promptly to climate change in the region,” said the Prime Minister. “Not only with policies, this time we also put forward many specific measures with many regional projects to connect ACMECS and CLMV.”
Countries see the need to strengthen intra-bloc relations while strongly developing relations with developed countries, from the leading ASEAN countries, the EU, China, other countries, and development partners such as the WB and ADB. "That is innovation. I feel that the leaders of ACMECS and CLMV feel the practicality of the conference held this time in Vietnam," the Prime Minister shared.
After summarizing the results of the Conference, the Prime Minister directly answered a number of questions from domestic and foreign reporters.
Prime Minister, could you please tell us the main results of the three conferences that took place in recent days?
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc:I have outlined the main results to inform you. I can make some more specific points. That is, we discussed measures to mobilize resources to develop and unleash the growth potential of the Mekong region. We have presented the opportunities and challenges of the fourth industrial revolution for the industrialization process in the Mekong countries and connectivity solutions, and proposed measures to strengthen cooperation between the Government and the business community, emphasizing that CLMV countries have been slower in development due to historical circumstances and difficult natural conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the investment environment better as well as apply the digital economy in these countries in a more timely manner, to promote their potential and strengths, especially in areas such as tourism, organic agriculture, and information technology.
Countries have introduced many positive measures in the implementation of projects they have set out.
What is special about the conferences hosted by Vietnam this time compared to previous ACMECS and CLMV conferences, Prime Minister?
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc:As I just said, the new point is the largest number of delegates attending so far. The number of development partners attending is also very large. Among them, the development partners also said to support resources for less developed countries, especially in CLMV. Large economic groups - the important decision makers for growth and development - participated from beginning to end, especially groups from the World Economic Forum. They carefully researched feasible projects to invest in ACMECS countries as well as CLMV. Especially the development partners are very enthusiastic, responsible and find the contents we put forward very practical. Therefore, they believe that there is a need for large regional projects to connect the region, especially connecting transportation, electricity, economies, and then inclusive growth, green growth in the development of the bloc.
What has Vietnam done to effectively seize and make the most of the opportunities brought about by the ACMECS and CLMV cooperation mechanisms, Prime Minister?
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc:Vietnam must see what its weaknesses are and what its responsibilities are within the bloc. This is a question. Therefore, preparing highly feasible projects for connectivity is very important. Vietnam must also raise the issue of improving the investment and business environment to be in the top group of ASEAN, not just in the CLMV group. The competitiveness index must be better, building a more creative, honest, developing, active, and proactive government to better manage the socio-economy, serve the people and businesses better, create the best resources for socio-economic development, keep up with and stand shoulder to shoulder with other countries.
