Boston Globe: America will soon go bankrupt if it continues to waste money on war

Economist Jeffrey Sachs has criticized the United States for its huge financial spending on military operations around the world. He wrote about this in The Boston Globe.

America, he argues, is experiencing what historian Paul Kennedy called "imperial overexertion."

He emphasized that the term “empire” is a perfect description of how the United States uses its power. American armed forces are deployed in dozens of countries. In addition, the United States uses force to influence who controls those countries.

Every year, Washington spends about $900 billion — a quarter of its budget spending — on military facilities and operations. But Sachs points out that the outcome of wars almost never meets the national interests of these countries. Therefore, the US has a choice: continue to implement the project of "unipolar dominance" despite failures in the Middle East and domestic problems, or end its imperial ambitions, — concludes the economist Sachs.

"If the next president does not escape the trap of costly wars in the Middle East, the budgetary costs alone could destroy any hope of a solution to our deep-seated internal problems," Sachs said.
