Instead of quietly withdrawing the article as before, the new regulation of the 2016 Press Law requires general news websites to re-post the correction and apology of the violating press agency and also be punished for violations.

The above information was given by Mr. Luu Dinh Phuc, Director of the Press Department at the Conference to disseminate the 2016 Press Law organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications in coordination with the People's Committee of Can Tho City on the morning of October 28, 2016.

This is considered one of the new points included in the 2016 Press Law. Accordingly, when a press agency reports false information, distorts, slanders, or insults the reputation of an agency, organization, or the honor and dignity of an individual, it must publish or broadcast a correction or apology in the press and notify that agency, organization, or individual.

And when a press agency posts or broadcasts a correction or apology on its site, the general news websites that have taken back the article must also repost the correction or apology from the offending press agency.

Press agencies that have published or broadcast infringing information, after making corrections and apologies, must be responsible for notifying electronic information sites that have agreements on using their news and articles so that the parties can re-post the corrections and apologies.

In addition, when a news aggregator website reposts violating content, it will also be disciplined for its violations.

Thus, with this new regulation, general news websites must be responsible for selecting and retrieving information in the coming time. At the same time, it will not be easy to deny responsibility when reposting information that violates the law, causing negative effects on agencies, organizations or individuals. Previously, most general news websites often quietly removed articles from the site and acted as if nothing had happened, but now they will be handled according to the law.

The Press Law 2016 was passed by the National Assembly on April 5, 2016, consisting of 6 chapters with 61 articles (an increase of 25 articles), of which 32 are newly established articles and 29 are amended and supplemented with provisions of the current Press Law. The Press Law 2016 will take effect from January 1, 2017.
