Margaret Boemer went in for a routine ultrasound when she was 16 weeks pregnant with her third child. The doctor told her that her baby had a rare condition called sacrococcygeal teratoma.
“We were shocked and really scared because we didn't know what the long phrase the doctor said meant and what danger the diagnosis would pose to the baby,” Margaret recalled.
According to Dr. Darrell Cass, director of the Texas Maternal and Pediatric Center, mesenteric teratoma is a tumor that develops in the fetus and from the baby's tailbone.
Girls are more likely to develop this tumour than boys, and it occurs in about 1 in every 35,000 births. In many cases, the tumour grows alongside the fetus and is removed after the baby is born.
However, in Boemer's case, the tumor grew and grew larger, stealing blood supply to the fetus, so her baby became weaker every day.
Other doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy. However, Dr. Darrell Cass and his team offered her another option: fetal surgery. Of course, this option was not 100% successful. In fact, the chances of the fetus surviving were slim.
Boemer said that at 23 weeks of pregnancy, the tumor grew and pressed on the fetus's heart, causing the baby to have a risk of heart failure. And she chose to have fetal surgery in the hope of saving her daughter's life.
At 23 weeks and 5 days of pregnancy, doctors performed emergency surgery. At that time, the tumor was larger than the fetus. The surgery took place within 5 hours, with the fetus being removed by cesarean section, most of the tumor removed, and the baby returned to the mother's uterus.
Although the surgery was successful, Boemer was ordered to stay in bed for the remainder of her pregnancy. Twelve weeks later, at nearly 36 weeks, baby Lynlee Hope was born a second time by cesarean section, weighing nearly 5 pounds.
LynLee's health is considered quite stable, however, 8 days after her second birth, she had to undergo surgery to remove the remaining part of the tumor.
The second surgery was also successful. The health of the baby girl who was born twice was completely normal like other children.
