The horrifying truth revealed in documents obtained from ISIS territory.

Posters and leaflets about harsh Islamic law scattered throughout villages in the north revealed a hellish life under IS rule.

Under the control of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS), tribes living in villages in northern Iraq have been forced to revert to the harsh laws of a thousand years ago, from regulations on beard length and rules on sacrifice and almsgiving to rules on the forced imprisonment of women.

Gold rings, diamonds, and wheat had to be donated to ISIS.

When Iraqi soldiers and supporting forces recaptured villages from insurgents, they also seized large quantities of documents, posters, and leaflets containing propaganda about the harsh laws imposed by the insurgents, which residents of the occupied areas were required to obey.

The seized items revealed that IS's rule followed a fairly strict and comprehensive system of ancient Islamic law. The view that each believer was a warrior clearly explains the extremist philosophy pursued by this group.

When this force emerged in early 2014, declaring the establishment of a self-proclaimed Islamic State, they deepened ethnic conflicts by calling on Sunnis, who were under Shi'ite leadership, to side with them, revere strict Islamic law, and become Islamic fighters pursuing a "holy war."

Violating this law means that the person will suffer Islamic-style punishment ranging from flogging and stoning to torture and brutal execution.

In September 2015 alone, ISIS brutally massacred civilians, executing 455 people, including 118 who were flogged to death simply for wearing inappropriate clothing, listening to music or smoking, or missing prayers. Some had their hands chopped off for similar reasons.

Gold rings, diamonds, and wheat were among the items that tribes were forced to offer to IS. Failure to do so would result in the punishments described above.

The self-proclaimed Islamic State printed a series of pink booklets containing 32 questions and answers on how to punish female prisoners, treating them as sex slaves. The booklet also detailed methods of coercion and punishment.

Accordingly, IS members were allowed to possess both sisters, permitted to rape the slaves as soon as they captured them, and only allowed to have relations with "underage girls if they were suitable for it." If multiple fighters jointly owned a female prisoner, they were not allowed to have sexual relations with her because "she was a shared asset."

The militants also have strict regulations, such as the right to freely inspect the mobile phones of people in the areas they occupy. IS also prohibits the use of the internet, satellite television, and listening to foreign music.

The Islamic State organization distributed leaflets throughout villages in northern Iraq demanding that all men grow long beards or face harsh punishment under Sharia law. Accordingly, young men who grow beards improperly or shave their beards could be imprisoned for three months. "In case of repeat offenses, these individuals will be beheaded."
