Floods in Central Vietnam: 14 dead, 5 missing

Floods in recent days in the central provinces have left 14 people dead, 5 missing and 20 injured.

This morning (November 6), in the South Central provinces, the rain has stopped. Floods in the lower reaches of the Ba River and rivers in Binh Dinh continue to recede. The recent floods in the Central provinces have left 14 people dead, 5 missing and 20 injured. Of these, Phu Yen province suffered the most damage, with 7 deaths.

Currently, 5 out of 17 medium and large hydroelectric reservoirs in the area are operating to discharge flood water with a common discharge flow of 200 to 400 cubic meters per second. Of which, Ba Ha River Hydroelectric Reservoir discharges at a flow rate of 1,200 m3/s, and Hinh River Hydroelectric Reservoir discharges at 1,000 m3/s.

As of this morning, flooding is still locally disrupting traffic on inter-district and inter-commune routes in Tuy Phuoc district, An Nhon town, Vinh Thanh, Van Canh, Phu Cat, Hoai An, An Lao, and Hoai Nhon districts. In Khanh Hoa province, the flooded areas on 23/10 street, Nha Trang city have all receded, traffic has been cleared, and there are still some localized flooding areas from 0.8-1.0m in some suburban areas.

The floods caused 221 houses to collapse completely, 250 houses to be damaged, more than 7,000 hectares of rice to be flooded; nearly 500 hectares of crops to be flooded and damaged. 440 buffaloes and 43,000 poultry were killed and swept away. 150 bridges and culverts were swept away by landslides, hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of traffic and irrigation soil and rocks were eroded. The total initial damage was estimated at nearly 500 billion VND.

Phu Yen province requested the Government to support 1,100 tons of rice to urgently relieve hunger for people in flood-affected areas, support tons of Chloruamin B, and 30 thousand Aquatabs tablets to treat water wells.
