(Baonghean.vn) - Before visiting the White House for the handover talks with President Barack Obama, Donald Trump called the British Prime Minister and expressed his desire to invite her to Washington as soon as possible to discuss trade agreements.

Mr. Trump recalled the warm relationship that existed since the 1980s between his predecessors Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

Sources say the two leaders affirmed that the two countries remain "close allies" even if Britain leaves the EU.

A Downing Street spokesperson added that both sides agreed that “the US-UK relationship is very important and very special, and needs to be prioritized and nurtured.”

May has pledged to build and expand Britain's relationships around the world, while also increasing bilateral trade and investment with the US after leaving the EU.

Trump praised British voters for "taking the country back" in the referendum. He also dismissed President Obama's threat that the U.S. would leave Britain "at the bottom of the list" for a transatlantic trade deal.

Officially taking office on January 20, 2017, the American billionaire has a particular interest in doing business in the UK, including a golf resort in Ayrshire.

According to Finance Minister Philip Hammond, the fact that Trump spoke with a host of world leaders, including Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, before contacting May shows that Britain is low on Trump's list of priorities.

Speaking in London at a trade summit with China, Hammond said the apparent delay in calls to May was because the two did not have "urgent work" to discuss.

He emphasized: “This special relationship has always remained strong and profound… I expect the relationship between the two countries to continue to develop sustainably and closely.”

Mr. Hammond also expressed concern about the anti-free trade message that Mr. Trump had articulated during his controversial election campaign.
