5 major welding fires killed dozens of people

(Baonghean.vn) - The cause of the karaoke bar fire in Cau Giay (Hanoi) yesterday (November 1) was initially determined to be due to the carelessness of the welder when welding the advertising sign. Previously, in our country, there have been many fires that killed many people, caused by welding.

1 - Renovating a "place to eat and play", 6 people died

The fire that broke out on the afternoon of November 19, 2013, at Zone 9 (9 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi) - a newly emerging entertainment area for Hanoi's youth, claimed the lives of 6 people and sent 6 others to the emergency room. More painfully, of the 6 deceased victims, 5 were relatives and lived in the same village, including 2 married couples.

The fire broke out when a group of workers were renovating an area in Zone 9 to make a bar and cafe. During the construction process, a welding flame accidentally splashed onto a pile of construction materials, which contained many foam boards, and caused a fire.

2 - Fire at Ho Chi Minh City International Trade Center (ITC)

The fire broke out at 1:30 p.m. on October 29, 2002. Due to carelessness while welding, a large fire broke out at the Blue nightclub in the Ho Chi Minh City International Trade Center (ITC), then spread and burned fiercely. The fire quickly engulfed the entire building.

The fire killed 60 people, including 4 foreigners, and injured 70 people due to burns, suffocation, and jumping from high floors of the building. Property damage amounted to more than 32 billion VND.

According to the investigation results, the cause of this terrible fire was when welding the positioning bolts on the ceiling, the welder let slag with a temperature of about 1,700 degrees Celsius splash into the soundproofing foam, causing the fire to spread quickly and become large.

3 - Horrific garment factory fire in Hai Phong

The garment factory fire on July 29, 2011 in Hai Phong left 13 people dead and 25 others injured, shocking many people.

Because the garment factory was a tube-shaped house with only one entrance, when the fire broke out fiercely, all 38 workers inside had no way out, they could only cry for help. The people quickly used all kinds of tools to break the back wall to rescue the victims. However, 13 people did not survive.

The cause of the fire was determined to be during the welding of a lightning rod for the factory, sparks flew down, catching on flammable materials inside the factory, causing the fire to flare up fiercely.

4 - Welding fire and lost smoke columns

The fire occurred on December 15, 2011, the construction site of the 33-storey Vietnam Electricity Building (Cua Bac Street, Hanoi) suddenly caught fire fiercely. Black smoke came out from all the holes in the building. Dozens of construction workers tried to escape through the stairs, rope ladders... The fire at the EVN building injured 27 people. The cause of the fire was determined to be due to the workers welding, sparks flying out and causing the fire.

5 - Fire at New Phuong Dong nightclub (Da Nang)

On the afternoon of December 21, 2012, a major fire broke out at New Phuong Dong nightclub - the largest nightclub in Da Nang. Five fire trucks and hundreds of police were mobilized to put out the fire and cordoned off the area. After three hours of active firefighting, the fire was completely extinguished.

The cause of the fire at New Phuong Dong nightclub was welding. Accordingly, while welding the iron frame, the welder carelessly let sparks fly into the foam layer on the ceiling of the soundproof room and caused the fire to spread.
