15 moments in the US presidential election

November 4, 2016 09:50

(Baonghean.vn) - The discord, shocking statements, and scandals in the race for the White House between Trump and Clinton have left many Americans frustrated. In a survey, 55% of voters felt “disgusted” with the election, while only 10% felt “excited”. For many Americans, there is no winner in the upcoming election.

Trump has been mired in controversy, but Hillary Clinton has also been criticized for being more concerned with her opponent’s sexist behavior than her own policies. Here are 15 moments that explain why the Trump-Clinton race was the “craziest” presidential campaign in American history.

1. Trump despises women

A video from 2005 was sent anonymously to the Washington Post. In the video, Donald Trump was seen talking to Access Hollywood host Billy Bush. Trump claimed that when he was a star, he could kiss women, sexually assault them, do whatever he wanted.

Immediately, Trump was strongly opposed and many women came forward to accuse Trump of kissing, touching, and harassing them before. This brought the Republican candidate's reputation to the lowest level.

2. “Clinton is a bad woman”

During the final presidential debate, when asked about his past disrespectful behavior toward women, Trump boldly declared, “Nobody respects women more than me.”

But just a few minutes later, while Clinton was speaking about social security, Trump insulted his opponent by interrupting with the words “What a nasty woman.” This remark became a topic of discussion on social networks for many days after that.

3. Obama was not born in America?

In 2011, Donald Trump made statements suggesting that America's first black president, Barack Obama, was not born in the United States. He even launched an investigation in Hawaii, where Obama was born in 1961, to prove what he called "one of the biggest political blunders ever."

To quell Trump's conspiracy theory, the White House finally released Obama's birth certificate, and it wasn't until September 16 this year that Trump admitted that President Obama was born in the United States.

4. Trump evaded taxes for 18 years

Donald Trump has refused to release his tax returns. An anonymous source has provided evidence to the New York Times that Trump avoided paying tax for 18 years starting in 1995. That year, he reported a £700 million loss due to business failures, which allowed him to avoid paying tax for the next 18 years. When the issue came up during the debate, Trump called it a “clever” method.

5. Miss Universe "Pig"

Without having to wait for the above sex scandal, Trump's disrespectful attitude towards women became a hot topic right after he became the Republican candidate.

Former Miss Universe 1996 Alicia Machado once worked for Trump, and she said he called her “Miss Pig.” Trump added that Machado was the worst Miss Universe: “She was overweight, which was a problem.”

6. Trump mocks Muslim family of dead soldier

Khizr and Ghazala Khan had a son, Humayun Khan, a US soldier who died in Iraq. When Mr. Khan spoke at the Democratic National Convention against the Muslim immigration ban, the Republican candidate mocked the family. Trump suggested that Ms. Ghazala was silent because she “wasn’t allowed to speak.”

7. No Mexican Judges Accepted

Trump University has been hit with multiple lawsuits alleging fraud. Trump has taken aim at the judge handling the case, Gonzalo Curiel, because he is Mexican and Muslim. Trump said it would be unfair for a Mexican to handle the Trump University lawsuit.

8. Hillary Clinton's email scandal

The email scandal is the biggest scandal of Mrs. Clinton when she used a private server at her home for work email during her time as US Secretary of State instead of using email on the US government server. Using personal email for work purposes will lead to security risks. Opponents have called this a violation of federal law.

The FBI conducted an investigation and concluded only that Hillary Clinton had been “extremely careless.”

9. Bill Clinton was also dragged into the affair.

Heavily criticized for sexual assault allegations, Trump suddenly dragged former President Bill Clinton, also the husband of his opponent, into the matter.

Minutes before the second debate, Trump held a press conference with three women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual harassment and a rape victim whose attacker was protected by Hillary. Trump also tried to bring the three women into the debate to confront Bill Clinton, but this was stopped by officials.

10. Trump threatens to jail Clinton if he is elected

The second debate was perhaps the moment when the conflict between the two candidates reached its peak. The two did not shake hands and Trump even threatened to put his opponent in jail if elected. Trump said that if he was elected, he would direct the Attorney General to appoint a prosecutor to investigate Mrs. Clinton for lies and deception. When Mrs. Clinton responded that Mr. Trump was completely wrong, he shocked everyone by saying, “Because you will go to jail.”

11. Trump bans Muslims from immigrating to the US

During his campaign, Donald Trump called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States until the Islamic State terrorist organization was defeated. However, Trump did not elaborate on what this action would achieve. Trump simply responded that it was because of the fear of terrorism like what happened in the past.

12. Mrs. Clinton's health

Clinton's health became a hot topic in September after she was diagnosed with pneumonia. At a 9/11 ceremony, she was unable to stand and had to be helped into her car, leading to conspiracy theories that she had brain damage or Parkinson's disease.

Trump of course did not miss the opportunity to attack his opponent when he accused Hillary Clinton of not having enough energy to become US President.

13. Trump teases disabled reporter

Kovaleski is an investigative reporter for the New York Times, but unfortunately he was born with a disability that caused one of his arms to cramp in front of his chest. In November 2015, when criticizing one of Kovaleski's articles, Trump acted out his disability. This caused public outrage. Trump later responded that he was not teasing because he did not know who Kovaleski was.

14. Trump mocks McCain for being a prisoner of war

Republican Senator John McCain was shot down as a pilot during the Vietnam War. Trump said of this: “He’s not a war hero. Is he a war hero because he was captured? I prefer people who weren’t captured.”

15. Hillary calls Trump supporters “deplorable”

Hillary Clinton has commented that half of Trump's supporters are "deplorables," implying they are racists, sexists, homophobes, and anti-immigrants.

This comment did not go down well with many people and caused her to lose some points in the race to the White House.
