World Teachers' Day was initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994 and is celebrated every October 5. According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents awareness, sympathy and appreciation for the important contributions of teachers and lecturers to the field of education and social development.
On 5 October 1966, UNESCO held an intergovernmental conference in Paris, France, and adopted the Recommendation on the Status of Teachers. This was the first international document defining the responsibilities, standards and rights of teachers. Public awareness campaigns are held annually to honor and appreciate the contributions of this noble profession.
