Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee inspects the economic model at the 'heavenly gate' of Muong Long

(Baonghean.vn) – On the morning of November 16, within the framework of a working trip to Ky Son district, comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee visited and worked with the leaders of Muong Long commune. Accompanying the delegation were leaders of a number of provincial departments, branches and sectors and leaders of Ky Son district.

Muong Long is a remote commune, located 40km east of Muong Xen town center. The commune has 13 villages with 894 households and 4,538 people, mainly Mong ethnic people. Here, the working group led by comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong visited elephant grass planting models to fatten cattle and pilot passion fruit planting models of households.

Reporting to the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and the working delegation, the Secretary of the Muong Long Commune Party Committee said that recently, Muong Long Commune has mainly focused on developing the model of growing elephant grass to fatten cattle. In particular, the commune is piloting the model of growing passion fruit trees in 2 households.

Accordingly, raising buffalo and cows in captivity is one of the long-standing cultural beauties of the people in the villages of Muong Long commune. In 1993, after the Party and the State had a policy to eliminate opium cultivation, the model of raising buffalo and cows in captivity was continuously expanded by introducing elephant grass into mass cultivation. Elephant grass is the main and important food source for raising buffalo and cows, contributing to increasing income and improving people's lives.

“Elephant grass is easy to grow, grows quickly and adapts well to local soil and climate conditions. Planting it only once a season can yield harvests for buffalo and cows for several years, without requiring much labor, providing a basic and important food source for raising buffalo and cows,” said the Party Secretary of Muong Long commune.

Currently, elephant grass has become a widely planted grass throughout the commune, with a total area of ​​tens of thousands of hectares. The main source of income for people in Muong Long commune is mainly from the efficiency of raising fattened buffalo and cows into goods. Thanks to this model, people have limited slash-and-burn farming on sloping land with low productivity and efficiency.

On the other hand, it contributes to maintaining the basic area of ​​protected forests and the benefits gained from exploiting forest resources and protecting forests, the environment and the natural ecosystem. In Muong Long 1 village, currently 100% of households grow grass to raise fattened cows, with an estimated average household income of 50-60 million VND per year.

Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Xuan Duong encouraged people of Muong Long commune to replicate the passion fruit model and affirmed that the province has support policies for people.

Also according to the Secretary of the Muong Long Commune Party Committee, in early 2016, the district introduced passion fruit trees for two households in Muong Long 1 village to plant on a pilot basis. After more than 7 months, the passion fruit trees are growing well and have produced their first crop of fruit. With 9-11 fruits reaching 1 kg, the quality is assessed by Nafoods Group Joint Stock Company as meeting grade 1 standards.

After listening to the report of the leaders of Muong Long commune, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee proposed to quickly replicate these two models.

“We are very excited because this year, the commune has done new things, confirming its initial success. After visiting, we found that the model of growing passion fruit and elephant grass is very suitable for the locality. The land and climate are also suitable. Therefore, we hope that the commune leaders and Party members of Muong Long commune will unite, be unified, and actively build the commune to become a leading locality in development in Ky Son”, Comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong emphasized.

In order for these models to be further developed, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee suggested that Muong Long commune should re-plan the cemetery in another area, reserving flat, fertile land to grow passion fruit. "If the models are well implemented, the results will not only be economic but also benefit from tourism. Muong Long is already a famous place, with a special climate and rare plants," the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee pointed out.

Comrade Nguyen Xuan Duong presented 30 gifts to 30 poor households in Muong Long commune, Ky Son.

Muong Long is still a particularly poor commune, the poverty rate according to the multidimensional poverty standard is still very high at 58.52% (522/894 households). There are still 3 villages without motorbike access and 8 villages without national grid electricity. In particular, in early 2016, Muong Long suffered double consequences of damage due to the historic frost and livestock disease with a total loss of more than 1 billion VND.

Working with the working group, Muong Long commune proposed to prioritize capital for basic construction investment and mobilize the capital raised in 2017 and 2018 to open roads to Tham Pang and Tha Lang villages, upgrade the inter-village road from Tham Hoc and Xam Xum intersection to Xam Xum and Huoi Khun villages. Invest in building the commune's office and fence the campus to ensure safety in all situations. Support the construction of Muong Long 1 Kindergarten or Primary School and commune health station meeting national standards in the period of 2016-2020. Support the construction of a cooperative growing grass to raise cattle and buffalo for sale and promote products to the market....

Regarding these recommendations, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee said that he would take note and work with the leaders of Ky Son district to continue to resolve them. At the end of the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Duong presented 30 gifts to 30 poor households in Muong Long commune.

Also on the morning of November 16, the working delegation visited the flood avoidance bridge model for students in Pieng Hom village (Pha Danh commune) and visited Pieng Hom Kindergarten.
