The owner was utterly surprised when the $13 vase purchased at a flea market turned out to be a valuable antique from the Qianlong era, worth 6,000 times its original value.

There, experts valued the vase at $37,400, and it reached $78,000 at yesterday's auction.

John Axford, head of Asian art at the auction house, identified the vase as being coated with a type of glaze reserved for the imperial court and dating it to at least 220 years old.

The vase bears a four-character seal of Qianlong, the sixth emperor of the Qing dynasty, and was crafted by imperial artisans between approximately 1736 and 1795. The vase comes with an octagonal enamel base measuring 7.6 cm in height.
