(Baonghean.vn) - To adapt to climate change, in recent years, localities in Quynh Luu district (Nghe An) have actively converted crop and livestock structures to suit, promoting household economic efficiency.

» Nghe An will convert over 5,000 hectares of rice land to growing crops and raising aquatic products.

Many areas of crop conversion have shown clear economic efficiency.

Previously, the people of Quynh Hong commune monocultured rice, so their lives were still difficult. In particular, the whole commune has 272 hectares of agricultural land, of which 160 hectares are in deep areas, difficult to produce, and rice cultivation is not effective.

The Quynh Hong Commune Party Committee has issued a Resolution to lead the conversion of crop and livestock structures to suit each region and soil quality in each field. Up to now, the entire commune has converted 35 hectares of low-yield rice to build 52 farms and ranches for raising livestock and poultry combined with aquaculture. The models all generate income from 100 to 400 million VND/year.

With high land areas that cannot be controlled by irrigation water sources, the commune has also planned to switch to growing vegetables using irrigation technology. In Hong Phu flower village alone, every year the locality introduces new flower varieties with high economic value into production such as Tulips, lilies, etc.

Rice fields without water supply are converted to growing other crops.

Meanwhile, people in Tan Son commune have promoted the production of winter vegetables on rice fields. With proper care and fertilization, the economic value of winter crops in the locality annually reaches 12 billion VND, accounting for about 12% of the total production value.

It is estimated that each year, the entire Quynh Luu district has more than 500 hectares of production land that lacks water and is ineffective in production. In addition to solutions to protect and regulate water resources to serve farmers' production, the District People's Committee has directed localities to implement the conversion of crop structure to adapt to climate change with many specific solutions such as gradually reducing the area of summer-autumn rice, switching to growing vegetables that use less irrigation water and are drought-resistant. During the rainy season, replace rice with plants that use a lot of water, are resistant to flooding or combine with aquaculture and seafood farming.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: "Currently, for areas of rice land that are not productive due to lack of water, the district has directed people to switch to growing other crops, and at the same time has a policy of supporting varieties for some areas that switch to growing corn. In production, the district is focusing on forming specialized agricultural production areas with upland crop varieties that can withstand extreme weather. At the same time, gradually building a brand for clean and safe agricultural products".
