On April 12, all the workers and Vui drilled holes and stuffed 6 mines into a 9m deep tunnel to blast rocks. When the mines exploded, Son fell into the tunnel. Then Vui, Pheng, Ngoc, and Binh used ropes to go down the tunnel to rescue him. Hoanh and Nhia tried to go down but had difficulty breathing so they called for help. As a result, Vui and Son's three siblings died of suffocation, while Binh was saved.
At the scene, investigators discovered and seized 1 package of electric detonators, 9 homemade mines and two unused packages of explosives.
Quang Nam Provincial People's Court sentenced defendant Van Thi Hoai Thuong to 24 months in prison for "Violating regulations on natural resource exploration and exploitation" and 6 months in prison for "Illegal manufacture, storage, transportation, use, purchase, sale or use of explosives".
