The ancient camphor tree in Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province, China has a hollow trunk, with only two pieces of bark remaining, but it is still growing healthily. It is about three meters in diameter, more than 10 meters tall, with lush green foliage.

Locals say the camphor tree is over 300 years old. They call it the “resilient tree” because of its exceptional resilience.

For now, camphor trees have been included in the list of precious trees that need to be protected by Vu Nguyen district.

According to experts, tree trunks grow larger every year. As the tree ages, the wood in the middle has difficulty getting oxygen and nutrients, so it rots and gradually dies.

In addition, factors such as lightning strikes, fungal, bacterial or animal damage can also cause hollowing out of the tree. However, because the vascular system is intact, essential nutrients are still transported to the parts, helping the tree grow healthily.
