The drill bit was removed from the patient's stomach. |
X-ray results showed that there was a small metal object in the female patient's stomach. This foreign object caused some damage and scratches to the stomach, causing pain to the patient.
Ms. Nguyet said that a day before, she went to have her teeth done at a facility in the city. During the procedure, the dentist lost his tools, and although he searched for them, he could not find them.
When she got home, Ms. Nguyet felt a stomachache so she went to the hospital for a check-up.
Because the drill bit is sharp and serrated, the removal process is quite difficult, so doctors must use a specialized tool to cover the sharp part when passing through the narrow part of the esophagus.
According to Dr. Tieng, fortunately the patient decided to go for an early check-up, because a sharp and dangerous foreign object like a drill bit would be extremely dangerous if it entered the small intestine.
It can cause intestinal perforation, and the worst consequences are abscesses, peritonitis... leading to the risk of death.
Swallowing foreign objects is not a rare case, but swallowing a dental drill like this case is quite rare – Dr. Tieng shared./.
