The exercise used a model of the South Korean presidential palace as the target of attack.Kim Jong-un watches the action through binoculars.
"Well done, the enemy will have no space to hide, let alone resist," KCNA quoted Mr. Kim as saying.
The KCNA report did not say when the drill took place and did not mention the South Korean parliament's unanimous impeachment of President Park Geun-hye over a scandal in which she allowed her close friend Choi Soon-sil to act as a secret adviser and profit from their relationship.
Park has been suspended from office while the Constitutional Court decides whether she is guilty. South Korean prosecutors today indicted a former presidential aide and a former vice culture minister in connection with the scandal.
According to Reuters, South Korean Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn called on the military to be on high alert, guarding against "any provocation" from North Korea, including cyber attacks.
"We are ready to retaliate if North Korea takes any provocative actions," a South Korean military official said.
