Truck crashes into German Christmas market, 9 people dead

A truck plowed into a crowded Christmas market in the capital Berlin, killing nine people and injuring at least 50, in what is believed to be a terrorist attack.

The incident happened on December 19 at the Square.Breitscheidplatz, the western part of central Berlin, less than a week before Christmas.Police said at least nine people were killed and 50 injured, four of them seriously.

Ambulances and heavily armed officers rushed to the area after the truck driver ploughed onto the sidewalk of the popular tourist market, in scenes reminiscent of the deadly truck attack in the French city of Nice in July, AFP reported.

Authorities have arrested the suspected driver. Another person in the truck died at the scene. The truck had Polish license plates, a police spokesman said.Kerstin Ziesmer said.
