Going back in history, 70 years ago, the young Democratic Republic of Vietnam faced a "life-threatening" situation when the French colonialists were determined to return to invade our country once again.

Upholding the spirit of patriotism and responsibility to the Fatherland and the people, on December 18 and 19, 1946, the Central Party Standing Committee, headed by President Ho Chi Minh, met and decided to launch a nationwide resistance war, calling on compatriots and soldiers nationwide to rise up together to fight against French colonialism and protect national independence.

Responding to President Ho Chi Minh's "Call for National Resistance", the entire nation joined forces and raised their iron determination to fight the enemy and defend the country with the belief in certain victory.

The people of the capital Hanoi heroically stood up and fired the first shots of the great national resistance war of the nation, with the spirit of "Determination to die for the survival of the Fatherland".

Despite the difference in forces and primitive weapons, against the elite enemy armed with modern weapons, the people and soldiers of the Capital fought steadfastly and creatively, "holding back" the enemy for 60 days and nights (from December 19, 1946 to February 17, 1947), creating conditions for the Party Central Committee and the Government to withdraw to a safe area, evacuate the majority of the people, bring a large amount of machinery and industrial equipment to the war zone... contributing to the whole country's proactive preparation to enter the long-term resistance war.

At the meeting with more than 600 retired Army and Police generals in the area on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of National Resistance Day, on December 11, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai emphasized: "The 60-day and night tenacious battle to "hold" the enemy in Hanoi was not a long period of time compared to the history of the capital and the country, but the stature and historical significance of the Winter Battle of 1946 will forever be a source of pride, an epic of indomitable will, bravery and courage"...
