Marina recalled the horrific moment her husband was murdered. “I was lying on the floor with everyone else. There were a lot of people at the exhibition. We were all in shock about what had happened. I only regained consciousness on the way to the hospital. I thought my husband was dead after that moment. He shot him 11 times. We didn’t have any security.
Only one translator accompanied us. When we arrived at the hospital, the mayor of Ankara was there, and representatives of the Turkish Ministry of Health came to visit. They talked for a long time and then they told me that my husband had died. I was in shock. My husband had done nothing wrong, and as far as I know, he had never been threatened. Many people knew we were going to the exhibition because it was scheduled in advance.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu were also present at the ceremony to bring Ambassador Andrey Karlov's coffin home.
Russian Ambassador to Türkiye Andrey Karlov was assassinated while he was giving a speech at an exhibition in Ankara on December 19. The suspect is believed to be Mevlut Mert Altintas, 22, a Turkish riot police officer. Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 19 called the assassination of Ambassador Karlov a “provocation” aimed at undermining Russia-Türkiye relations and peace efforts in Syria. President Putin asserted that the “only response” to the murder of Ambassador Andrey Karlov would be for Russia to propose “intensifying the fight against terrorism.” On the same day, President Erdogan emphasized: “I believe that this is also an attack on the Turkish government and people. Obviously, this is a provocation against Turkish-Russian relations. I assure our Russian friends that they will find the truth. Neither Türkiye nor Russia will be affected by this attack.” |
