Tan Ky: Increasing farmers' income from models
(Baonghean) - Tan Ky district has many advantages for agricultural development such as in cultivation, livestock and poultry farming. In recent years, with the attention of local authorities, many models of crops and livestock with high income have appeared in the district.
Building a 100 ton/ha sugarcane field
Sugarcane has been the main crop of Tan Xuan commune (Tan Ky) for over 20 years. However, due to traditional farming methods, mainly by human and buffalo power, the productivity and quality of sugarcane are not high. Earlier this year, with the support of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, Tan Xuan commune decided to consolidate land into a model with an area of 50 hectares of Thai sugarcane.

Sugarcane fields are grown using new methods, giving high productivity in Thanh Tra hamlet, Tan Xuan commune (Tan Ky). |
Mr. Truong Van Thuy - head of Thanh Tra hamlet, Tan Xuan commune excitedly said: "Since applying this new farming method, the productivity and quality of sugarcane has increased significantly. 1 hectare reaches 100 tons, 30 tons/ha higher than before."
According to Mr. Thuy, the new production method is supported by a 3-pan plow, the land is plowed up to 30 cm deep, sugarcane is planted in double rows, 1.3 m wide beds (previously people planted in single rows, 90 cm wide beds), so the sugarcane density is higher. Moreover, sugarcane varieties are replaced by new varieties KK2 and Viet Duong, which have fewer pests and diseases.
Ms. Phan Thi Ngu - an agricultural officer of Tan Xuan commune said: The whole commune currently has 370 hectares of sugarcane land, of which sugarcane grown using the new production method is 50 hectares. The yield of this type of sugarcane is approximately 100 tons/ha compared to 60 tons/ha using the old method.
This is the first crop to apply this method, so most of the sugarcane after harvest will be used as seeds for replication in the following years." From plowing the land to placing seeds in the furrows, all work is done mechanically. Sugarcane growers are supported by Song Con Sugarcane Company with sugarcane humus to improve the soil, and lime to treat acid sulfate soil.
The special thing about this new method is that people have switched from single sugarcane planting to double sugarcane planting. This helps increase the number of plants per unit area, so sugarcane yield increases significantly.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy - Deputy Director of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company said: In the 2015 - 2026 sugarcane crop, the company supported the construction of 2 high-income sugarcane fields with an area of 100 hectares, of which 50 hectares were in Tan Xuan and 50 hectares were in Nghia Dong commune. In the 2016 - 2017 crop, the company continued to support the construction of 100 hectares of high-income sugarcane in the district.

Promote dairy farming
Mr. Nguyen Hung Son's family in Hamlet 3, Nghia Hop Commune is the first household in Tan Ky District to invest in dairy farming. In early 2014, through mass media and direct visits to some cow farming models in and outside the province, Mr. Son's family decided to invest hundreds of millions of VND to build barns and raise 4 mature dairy cows.
At first, the family was quite confused about the technical aspects of care, but with guidance from Vinamilk's staff, they successfully applied the dairy cow raising process skillfully. Up to now, his herd of dairy cows has more than 20, each day bringing the family from 1 to 1.5 million VND/day.
From the effectiveness of the dairy farming model of Mr. Nguyen Hung Son's family, many households inside and outside the commune have come to visit, learn, invest in building barns, and buy dairy cows to raise, such as the families of Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, Tran Duy Cuong, and Chu Van Loan in hamlet 3, Nghia Hop commune.
Typically, Mr. Nguyen Thu Ngoan's family in Hamlet 11, Nghia Dong Commune has invested over 5 billion VND to build a dairy farm with a total herd of 50 cows. Mr. Ngoan's farm is built on a 5-hectare field, of which he used 1 hectare to build barns, and the remaining 4 hectares to grow elephant grass, ensuring enough roughage for the cows.

Mrs. Nga enthusiastically said: The attention and encouragement of the local government is the driving force that helps me to have more determination in developing livestock farming. After many years of working on the farm, I see that farming, especially livestock farming, is greatly affected by the market, so farm owners need to have knowledge, capital and proactively find markets.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Thuc - Head of the Agriculture Department of Tan Ky district said: Based on local crops and livestock, the district focuses on directing and creating conditions for people to apply new production methods, in order to increase farmers' income.
