During the 3-day New Year holiday in 2017, there were 93 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 79 people and injuring 54 people.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Thai, Chief of Office of the National Traffic Safety Committee, said that according to the report of the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), during the 3-day New Year holiday (from December 31, 2017 to January 2, 2017), there were 93 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 79 people and injuring 54 people. Of which, 91 road accidents occurred, killing 77 people and injuring 54 people; 2 railway accidents, killing 2 people; and no traffic accidents occurred on inland waterways.

On the third day of the three-day New Year holiday alone, there were 32 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 23 people and injuring 23. Of these, 30 road accidents occurred, killing 21 people and injuring 23; and 2 railway accidents occurred, killing 2 people.

Local traffic police inspected and handled 3,551 cases of traffic safety violations; imposed fines and paid to the State Treasury: 2 billion 897 million VND; temporarily detained 21 cars, 317 motorbikes; revoked 276 driving licenses; National Waterway Police inspected and handled 115 cases of traffic safety violations; paid to the State Treasury 97.5 million VND.

During the 3-day New Year holiday, local road traffic police nationwide inspected and handled 9,571 cases of traffic safety violations; imposed fines of VND8,103 million to the State Treasury; temporarily detained 78 cars, 1,123 motorbikes, and revoked 527 driving licenses; The national waterway police force inspected and handled 469 cases of traffic safety violations; submitted VND395.6 million to the State Treasury; Highway traffic control patrol teams of the Traffic Police Department drew up records and handled 203 cases, submitted VND177.45 million to the State Treasury, and revoked 69 driving licenses.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, during the 3-day New Year holiday of 2017, although people's travel demand increased, concentrated at major traffic hubs and on key traffic routes leading to major cities, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, due to the preparation and effective implementation of the transport organization plan and increased patrols and controls, traffic order and safety nationwide were maintained stable, safe, and smooth, with no particularly serious accidents involving passenger cars or prolonged traffic jams. However, there were still cases of increased ticket prices, cars carrying more passengers than the prescribed number on some routes, and local congestion at some important intersections in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City./.
