Scientists at NASA’s Langley Research Center have revealed the idea of building ice houses on Mars, Nature World News reported. Ice houses are dome-shaped houses that are inflated and covered with a thick layer of ice to serve as living and working places for astronauts.

The main goal of the idea is to protect the crew from high-energy radiation, such as cosmic rays, which penetrate the Martian atmosphere. Cosmic rays can damage cells, increasing the risk of health problems such as cancer and acute radiation sickness.

"The materials used to build the ice house must withstand the harsh environment on Mars, including ultraviolet light, radiation, as well as dust storms, for many years," said Sheila Ann Thibeault, a researcher at the Langley Research Center.

Hydrogen-rich ice could act as a shield against these rays, making it an excellent cover for protecting astronauts. In addition, ice houses would be much lighter than other housing ideas that would need to be built on Earth before being launched to the Red Planet.

According to the research team, ice houses with lightweight frames, easy to assemble and able to use the planet's available water materials are the perfect solution for housing on Mars.

"The idea of building an ice house on Mars has many advantages. It is light and can be transported and assembled by simple robots. The house will also be filled with water before the crew arrives," the research team said.
