Unclaimed suitcase containing 50kg of suspected rhino horns 'flew' from Africa

Nearly 20 suspected rhino horns were discovered in a suitcase that no one claimed to own on a flight from Kenya to Hanoi on the afternoon of December 29.

On the afternoon of December 29, through baggage screening, the Customs Department of Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi Customs Department) and the Anti-Smuggling Crime Police Department (C74, Ministry of Public Security) inspected a red suitcase wrapped in nylon on the outside, weighing more than 60kg, suspected of containing contraband goods but with no one claiming to be the owner. The suitcase was transported on a flight from Nairobi (Kenya) to Hanoi at 2:00 p.m. the same day.

In the suitcase, authorities suspected there were more than 50kg of suspected rhino horns, including 6 front horns, 3 back horns, 7 segments and 3 pieces. The heaviest horn weighed more than 7kg.

According to the assessment of anti-smuggling customs officers at Noi Bai, if it were rhino horn, the value of the shipment in the illegal market would be more than 20 billion VND.
