Finns 'make money without doing anything' every month.
Finland is testing a program that guarantees income for 2,000 citizens regardless of whether they are employed or not.
CNN Money reports that the program, which started in January, is one of the Finnish government's first attempts to test a "universal basic income" policy. Participants will receive $587 per month, regardless of their income, assets, or employment status.
This policy was formulated with the idea of providing a basic income for all citizens to ensure stability for workers, especially as advanced technology reduces the need for human labor. Additionally, it encourages the unemployed to take on odd jobs without losing their rights.
The pilot program will run for two years. Participants will be randomly selected but must be receiving unemployment benefits or income support. The money they receive from the program will not be taxed.

If successful, this program could be expanded to all adult citizens in Finland.
According to the Finnish government, this policy could save money in the long run. The country's social welfare system is complex and requires a large amount of money, so simplifying it could cut costs.
This policy is not an idea unique to Finland.
The pioneering city of Livorno in Italy implemented this program in June, guaranteeing a basic income for the 100 poorest families in the city. Starting in January 2017, this plan will be expanded to include another 100 families, each receiving $525 per month.
