"Sanctions are in place, and Mr. Trump has been elected president. I hope that after January 6th, you will see that Russia really did interfere in our election," Graham said.
On January 6, US intelligence leaders planned to inform President Trump about "Russian interference" in the US election. Graham criticized Trump, who appeared skeptical of the allegations made by US intelligence agencies against Russia. "It seems like Trump has a blind spot (regarding the Russian Federation), and I'm completely baffled by this," said Graham, who is working with Senator John McCain to draft sanctions related to the Russian Federation.
The prospects of Graham's proposed bill remain unclear. Even the current Obama administration opposes similar congressional initiatives. By imposing sanctions through presidential directives, the current administration maintains decision-making flexibility, whereas congressional sanctions leave the White House powerless.
