President Obama celebrates Christmas for the last time at the White House
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama wished Americans a Merry Christmas one last time before leaving the White House in early 2017.
"Merry Christmas! One of the great things about the holiday season is spending time with the special people in your life. For me, that also means getting help from my best friend for my Christmas speech," President Barack Obama said in a video posted by the White House on December 24. Sitting next to him was First Lady Michelle Obama.
First Lady Michelle recalled the first time the two delivered Christmas greetings at the White House in 2009, saying she realized Mr Obama would need all the help he could get for his Christmas speech.
President Obama summed up his time in office, saying America is stronger and more prosperous than when he succeeded George W. Bush.
“Together, we pulled ourselves out of the worst recession in 80 years and have the lowest unemployment rate in nine years,” he said. “We’ve made America more respected around the world, given America leadership in the fight to protect the planet for our children and grandchildren, and much, much more.”
The Obamas thanked U.S. troops and their families for their service to the country. This was the Obamas' final speech before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.
"On behalf of the Obama family, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Bo and troublemaker Sunny, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas," Obama said.
"And we wish you and your families a happy and healthy 2017... thank you. God bless you all," Michelle concluded her speech.
