The Jade Buddha statue symbolizing world peace is on display in Nghe An.

(Baonghean.vn) - Representatives of the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Association of Nghe An province have announced that the event "Welcoming and venerating the World Peace Jade Buddha Statue" will be held for 19 days, from January 25th to February 12th, 2017 (corresponding to December 28th of the Year of the Monkey to January 16th of the Year of the Rooster) at Dai Tue Pagoda (Nam Anh commune, Nam Dan district).

The official opening ceremony will take place on January 28, 2017 (12 midnight on the first day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Rooster) with Buddhist rituals and ceremonies: chanting Buddha's name, commemorating the martyrs and heroes, consecrating the jade Buddha, offering incense, releasing balloons and doves to pray for national peace and prosperity, and world peace.

The World Peace Jade Buddha statue was carved from a single 18-ton block of jade.

Throughout the World Peace Jade Buddha Exhibition at Dai Tue Pagoda, there will be cultural performances, a play about Mai Hac De, incense offerings, sermons, chanting of scriptures, prayers for peace, and veneration of the jade Buddha; viewing Buddhist images; a seminar on Vietnamese Buddhist culture; a calligraphy festival to pray for wisdom and planting trees in the spring…

The World Peace Jade Buddha statue is a Buddha statue carved from an 18-ton monolithic jade block, discovered in Canada in 2000 and completed in December 2008 by leading Thai artisans.

The jade Buddha statue depicts a meditating Buddha seated on a lotus throne in the lotus position, radiating compassion. The completed jade Buddha statue is 2.54 meters high and 1.77 meters wide, consisting of five parts: the body, the topknot, the halo, the lotus throne, and the alms bowl. This is the world's largest jade Buddha statue, sculpted in the likeness of the Shakyamuni Buddha in the Mahabodhi stupa at Bodh Gaya (India).

In 2009, the statue was brought to Vietnam for the first time for monks, Buddhists, and visitors from all over the world to venerate.
