Russian scientists believe that North America and Russia's Siberia region will merge into one block in the future, Sputnik reported.
One billion years ago, Siberia and North America were part of a single supercontinent covering more than 25 million square kilometers. However, about 600 million years ago, geological processes caused Siberia to separate from North America, forming the present-day continents.
"Current data allow us to predict the future position of the continents. A geological forecast for 250 million years from now shows that Siberia will once again move north of America. The supercontinent cycle will be completed, creating a new supercontinent," explained Dmity Gladkochub, director of the Institute of Earth's Crust Research at the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to geological predictions, the Japanese archipelago will also merge with Russia in the next 30 million years, he said.
