(Baonghean.vn) -The wedding tail is an indispensable part of the wedding feast in many Thai communities in Nghe An. In the beliefs of the highlanders, it symbolizes the elegance of the wedding ceremony.

The Thai people in Tien Ky commune (Tan Ky district) and Mau Duc and Thach Ngan communes (Con Cuong district) still retain many unique aspects of their traditional wedding customs. After the wedding procession, the bride and groom have a shared meal. The Thai community here calls it "pa khau ngai xao," which roughly translates to "the girl's lunch." In reality, this is the first meal in the married life of the newlyweds. From this point on, the girl has left her maidenhood and begun her life as a wife and daughter-in-law.

The groom's family comes to ask for the bride's hand in marriage during a wedding ceremony of the Thai ethnic group in Con Cuong district.

In this wedding feast, besides traditional dishes like chicken and stir-fried bitter bamboo shoots, there is a bowl of pork presented in a rather unusual way. The most distinctive feature of this meal is a pig's tail stuck in the bowl, surrounded by pieces of meat.

The last meal of their maidenhood and the first of their married life is truly the first test for the newlyweds. They must eat all the food, including the pig's tail, along with their friends in the wedding procession.

The meal featured a considerable amount of food, with each dish served on two plates. Mr. Lao Van Thanh, residing in Hamlet 2, Tien Ky Commune (Tan Ky District), explained: “The meal symbolizes the couple's life together, living in harmony and happiness. The pig's tail represents the elegance of the wedding ceremony.”
