(Baonghean.vn) -The tail is an indispensable part of the wedding meal of many Thai communities in Nghe An. In the concept of the highlanders, it represents the luxury of the wedding ceremony.

The Thai people in Tien Ky commune (Tan Ky) and Mau Duc commune, Thach Ngan (Con Cuong) still retain many unique features in traditional wedding customs. After the wedding procession, the bride and groom have a meal together. The Thai community here calls it “pa khau ngai xao” which roughly translates to “girl’s lunch”. In fact, this is the first meal in the married life of the bride and groom. From here, the girl has passed her maidenhood and begun her life as a wife and daughter-in-law.

The groom's family came to ask for the bride at the wedding ceremony of the Thai people in Con Cuong district.

In this meal tray, in addition to wedding dishes such as chicken and stir-fried bitter bamboo shoots, there is also a bowl of pork arranged in a rather unique way. The most special feature of this meal tray is a pig's tail placed on the bowl with pieces of meat around it.

The last meal of their girlhood and the first of their married life is truly the first test for the newlyweds. They and their friends in the wedding procession must eat all the food, including the pig's tail.

The meal had a large amount of food because each dish was served on two plates. Mr. Lao Van Thanh, resident of Hamlet 2, Tien Ky Commune (Tan Ky District) said: “The tray of food symbolizes the couple’s life as a couple, living in harmony and happiness. The pig’s tail represents the luxury of the wedding ceremony.”
