Mesut Ozil goes crazy over Federer winning the Australian Open
The Arsenal star exploded with excitement, while many other big names in the football world rejoiced at the Swiss tennis player's 18th Grand Slam title.
A day after beating Southampton 5-0 in the FA Cup, many Arsenal players gathered in the team gym to watch the Australian Open final live on TV. They made no secret of their affection for Roger Federer as they watched the Swiss player defeat Rafael Nadal in a five-set match with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
In the video shared by midfielder Granit Xhaka on Instagram, many Arsenal members were happy when the match at Rod Laver, Melbourne ended with Federer's victory. The two German players, Shkodran Mustafi and Mesut Ozil, were more excited than anyone else, jumping, flexing their arms and making gestures as if they were celebrating a goal or a victory for Arsenal.
According to the British press, it seems that there was a small bet between Arsenal players about the Australian Open final, between the Spanish players such as Nacho Monreal, Lucas Perez, Hector Bellerin and the rest. And Federer's victory made the non-Spanish members of the group happy.
Xhaka, the Swiss international, was excited to see his countryman win the tennis world's first Grand Slam of the year. He shared a video on Instagram: "A great match. The KING is back, the one and only."
The 2017 Australian Open championship marked Federer's return after a year without a Grand Slam title since Wimbledon 2012. His victory therefore delighted the tennis world, including the most famous names from the football world.
On Twitter, legendary AC Milan defender Franco Baresi called Federer's latest title "a majestic feat". He also wrote "Roger Federer - a legend without end" to praise the 35-year-old Swiss player's perseverance.
2000 Ballon d'Or winner Luis Figo sent "Congratulations to the great Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal". The former Real Madrid and Inter midfielder said that regardless of the result, both players are "true champions".
