The Earth's magnetic field could weaken, causing iron snow and sulfur volcanoes to appear, and leaving the planet unable to protect against cosmic rays.

In a recent study,magazinearXiv,cScientists from NASA's MESSENGER project believe that in the distant future, Earth will share the same fate as Mercury today, as its iron core cools, causing its magnetic field to weaken, according to Sputnik.

Research shows that despite being the smallest planet in the solar system, Mercury still has its own magnetic field, albeit about 100 times weaker than Earth's.Mercury's magnetic field is sustained by layers of iron snow and sulfur volcanoes, but this doesn't protect it from the constant bombardment of radioactive particles from the solar wind.

Mercury's magnetic field was first detected in 1974, but it has weakened due to the planet's cooling core. This worries scientists about the future of our planet, as the temperature of Earth's core is also decreasing by about 100 degrees Celsius every billion years.

A similar scenario would unfold if the Earth's magnetic field weakened, and we would face iron snow and sulfur volcanoes.

Furthermore, harmful radiation from the solar wind will also bombard Earth when the magnetic shield weakens. Currently, the solar wind blowing towards Earth is deflected by the magnetic field. Without the magnetic field, harmful particles would break down the ozone layer, posing a danger to humans.
