Prosecution of bus explosion in Bac Ninh

On February 23, the investigation agency initiated a case of “illegal transportation of explosives” to investigate the cause of the sleeper bus explosion that killed 16 people on the evening of February 21 on National Highway 18, through Que Vo district, Bac Ninh.

Regarding the cause of the bus explosion, Colonel Nguyen Cong Nghiep - Deputy Director of Bac Ninh Provincial Police said that the initial investigation results determined that this was an explosion caused by explosives, not from the gas tank or an electrical short circuit. Regarding the origin of the explosive material, the police are continuing to investigate and clarify.

According to information from some passengers sitting around the explosion area, before the explosion occurred, they smelled a burning smell. Some other passengers also said that it could be people burning trash on the roadside, causing the smell to get into the car. After a long while of chatting, a loud explosion rang out, causing the passengers to panic.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Cong Khoi - Head of the Criminal Police Department (PC45, Bac Ninh Provincial Police) - said that the investigation agency is currently examining to determine what type of explosives were on the passenger bus.

Previously, at around 10:13 p.m. on February 21, while traveling on National Highway 18 to Dong Du Bridge (in Dao Vien Commune, Que Vo District, Bac Ninh Province), a Ka Long sleeper bus with license plate 14B-006.94 suddenly exploded, killing 2 people on the spot and injuring 14 others.
