First transgender model on the cover of Vogue Paris: 'Beauty that shook the world'

Valentina Sampaio (Brazil) will appear on the cover of the famous magazine Vogue Paris in the March issue. Sampaio has become the first transgender model to appear on the cover of a French magazine.

On the cover of Vogue Paris, Sampaio looks incredibly sexy, “immersed” in dark blue and purple lights, with the words “Transgender beauty. How they are shaking the world” below.

Vogue Paris magazine describes Sampaio (22 years old) as a “deadly mysterious woman” who was born a boy.

“Beyond her obvious physical attributes and personality, Sampaio embodies a long and painful fight against what is perceived as ‘gender exile,’” said Emmanuelle Alt, editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris.

Sampaio is the latest transgender person to make headlines. In June 2015, Caitlyn Jenner, a former US track star, made history by undergoing gender reassignment surgery and appearing on the cover of Vanity Fair, prompting Glamour US to name her “Woman of the Year.”

Valentina Sampaio is looking fresh.

“Vogue supports and chooses to celebrate transgender people in a post-gender world. Transgender people appear on the cover of Vogue Paris, we don't need an article about this topic because we know that this battle has been won,” Alt said.

Alt also praised other transgender people such as Lea T, the "muse" of Riccardo Tisci, designer of the Givenchy fashion brand.

In his letter to readers, Alt also recalled the pain endured by transgender supermodel Caroline Cossey. Cossey had a supporting role in For Your Eyes Only (1981) and posed for Playboy magazine before being “attacked” by the British newspaper News of the World with an article headlined “James Bond Actress is a Man” in 1982.

In fact, the world has become more “progressive” in its view of transgender people. In December 2016, the American magazine National Geographic published a cover photo of Avery Jackson, a 9-year-old transgender girl, with the headline “Gender Revolution”.

Laverne Cox, who stars in the TV series Orange Is the New Black, also appeared on the cover of Time magazine in June 2014.
