When it comes to sporty B-class small hatchbacks, car manufacturers from Europe and the US have long dominated the segment with names like Volkswagen Polo GTI, Ford Fiesta ST, Renaultsport Clio... "Attacking" this segment, Toyota has officially launched the all-new Toyota Yaris GRMN sports version at the Geneva exhibition. |
As the first model to "step out" into the world market of the high-performance division GRMN (short for Gazoo Racing, Masters of the Nürburgring) which only operates in Japan, it is not difficult to recognize the Yaris GRMN from the regular Yaris versions. The car has been improved by GRMN's aerodynamic characteristics by equipping it with a sporty bodykit and a tailgate above the rear door. |
The sporty Yaris GRMNs are also distinguished by their white paintwork with blocky designs using orange-red-black tones. They also come with premium sports rims from the German company BBS, measuring up to 17 inches in diameter. |
Inside, Toyota has equipped the Yaris GRMN with a 3-spoke sports steering wheel taken from the GT86 2-door coupe, along with a pair of racing seats and aluminum pedals. The seats inside the interior are covered in black Alcantara velvet, while the floor also has red-edged carpets that are not present on the regular Yaris. |
Powering the Yaris GRMN is a 1.8-liter inline-four engine with a fairly large capacity of 205 horsepower. However, unlike its competitors that achieve similar power thanks to turbocharging, GRMN has chosen a supercharger solution for the car. This engine is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. |
Thanks to the Torsen front differential lock, power is transmitted more efficiently to the wheels. Meanwhile, the braking system with cooling discs and 4-piston calipers at the front wheels helps the driver to control the car more easily. |
As the GRMN division's name suggests, the sporty Yaris has been tested on the legendary Nurburgring racetrack in Germany. The car's suspension includes Sachs shock absorbers with shorter springs and stabilizer bars mounted across the body, improving the car's body stiffness and control feel when driving. |
According to Toyota, there will only be a total of 1,000 Yaris GRMNs produced for Europe, with an expected selling price equivalent to the GT86 sports coupe. |
