Lawyer S. Selvam of suspect Doan Thi Huong - accused of killing Mr. Kim Chol, believed to be Kim Jong-nam, on March 7 asked the Malaysian justice minister to conduct another forensic examination.

Doan Thi Huong was convicted of murder by the Sepang court on March 1 in connection with the death of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Malaysian police said the victim was poisoned with VX nerve agent on February 13 while waiting for a flight back to Macau. Another Indonesian woman, Siti Aisyah, 25, was also charged.

Mr. S. Selvam, the lawyer agreed by Doan Thi Huong's father to defend his daughter, announced on March 7 that he would write a petition to the Malaysian justice minister requesting a second forensic examination.

“North Korean Ambassador to the United Nations Ri Tong-il has stressed that North Korean citizen ‘Kim Chol’ died of a heart attack, not of poisoning. The comment by a North Korean official is a reasonable reason for Malaysia to reconsider,” said S. Selvam, adding: “If there is a second autopsy, experts must be invited to conduct it. We must also invite North Korean forensic experts who are knowledgeable about VX poison.”

However, Malaysian Health Minister S. Subramaniam cited the results of the forensic team to confirm that “Mr. Kim Jong-nam” could not have died from a heart attack. “Based on the autopsy results, the victim did not suffer from a heart attack,” Mr. S. Subramaniam said in Parliament on March 6.

Malaysian police previously seized a passport bearing the name Kim Chol from “Kim Jong-nam”. A friend of the victim said that “Kim Jong-nam” often used a passport bearing this name when traveling abroad.

Siti Aisyah’s lawyer Gooi Soon Seng said he was not sure whether to support the proposal by lawyer S. Selvam. “Siti Aisyah is under strict surveillance at Kajang Prison. There are many guards outside. We are only allowed to talk for an hour. They watch us through the glass window but cannot hear what we say. Siti Aisyah is fine,” Gooi told The Star.

Meanwhile, the father of suspect Doan Thi Huong is very worried about his daughter and plans to visit her at Kajang prison.
