Tigness is part of Savoie in southeastern France, near the Italian border. Tigness has been listed many times as one of the world's most beautiful ski resorts and is also the venue for an annual swimsuit competition, attracting thousands of tourists.

The landslide on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, according to local officials, occurred outside the Grand Balme area at 9:50 a.m.

Several skiers were pushed away as snow fell onto the slopes and were helped from the scene by rescue workers.

A spokesman for Savoie told CNN there were no victims in the avalanche.

Several witnesses took to social media to share their experiences of the avalanche on Tuesday. Violette Verite tweeted: “I was engulfed in a snowstorm in Tigness this morning while on the slopes. Scariest moment of my life.”

A statement from Tigness Town Hall confirmed that the ski area would remain open with restrictions in place. The statement also warned of the risk of avalanches at Tigness, which has been rated 4/5.

Four people died at the ski resort in an avalanche that occurred last month, on February 13, 2017. The four men were in an off-piste area when they died, and the avalanche spread over an area of ​​about 300m, burying them.
