German Shepherd Dogs Detect Breast Cancer With 100% Accuracy

After 6 months of training, a pair of German Shepherd dogs named Thor and Nykios were able to accurately detect 100% of breast cancer cases.

The above conclusion was confirmed by French scientists in a research project on breast cancer diagnosis methods in rural areas, where the medical examination and treatment system is still limited.

Announcing to the press, the project team said that after 6 months of training, the coupleGerman Shepherdnamed Thor and Nykios were able to accurately detect 100% of breast cancer cases by sniffing a gauze pad that came into contact with the patient's chest.

Scientists hypothesize that cancer cells have a distinctive odor that dogs' keen sense of smell can detect. According to the research team, this simple, low-cost, non-invasive method could revolutionize the detection of tumors that current imaging methods cannot detect.

With this discovery, the project team hopes that in the future, scientists can create electronic "sniffing" machines, replacing dogs, capable of diagnosing medical samples sent by post.

This is the only project that detects the disease based on samples of items that come into contact with the patient's skin. French researchers are currently conducting projects testing dogs' sense of smell through methods to detect other types of cancer through blood, urine or even human breath. In France, the chance of survival for breast cancer patients for 10 years after detection is up to 85%, while this rate in poor countries is only about 50%.
