According to Reuters, the 25-year-old Thai contestant beat 24 other contestants in the final of the Miss International Queen 2016 competition held on the night of March 10th. The first and second runner-up positions went to contestants from Brazil and Venezuela, respectively.
This is arguably the world's largest and most famous beauty pageant for transgender people, attracting contestants from all over the world. Initiated a decade ago, the competition aims to help transgender women feel more confident and accepted by society.
This year marks the 12th anniversary of the Miss International Queen 2016 competition. The event is being held at the Tiffany nightclub in the coastal city of Pattaya, Thailand.
Just like other beauty pageants, contestants have to go through rounds of competition including national costume, evening gown, and swimsuit.
Despite having a significant lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, Thailand remains a relatively conservative society. The country still lacks laws recognizing same-sex marriage.
The Miss Transgender 2016 pageant was postponed from last November due to the mourning period for King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who passed away on October 13th at the age of 88.
