German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to the US has been postponed until March 17 due to the impact of a snowstorm.

Snowstorms and strong winds have caused major disruption to travel and transportation in the northeastern states of the United States. Hundreds of thousands of passengers have been affected as thousands of flights have been canceled.

Early on the morning of March 14 (local time), the US National Weather Service issued a warning of high winds and snowstorms in New York City. City officials estimated that the cost of snow removal could reach more than $30 million.

Meanwhile, many schools from Washington to Boston have been closed.

Heavy snowfall has also disrupted government offices and people have been advised to limit travel.

Nearly 8,000 flights were canceled, affecting the travel of more than 400,000 passengers. The late-season snowstorm also affected German Chancellor Angela Merkel's plans to visit the US. The visit has been postponed until March 17./.
