Two more dead pigs discovered: Commune suspects an outbreak is occurring.

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of April 1st, residents of Hamlet 17, Quynh Van commune, discovered two more dead pigs dumped in the siphon culvert of the Vuc Mau large canal system.

Residents are outraged as they repeatedly discover dead pigs being illegally dumped.

Approximately 3 meters from the siphon opening, two dead pigs were found floating (one weighing about 80 kg, the other about 50 kg), in an advanced state of decomposition and emitting a foul odor.

In addition, many carcasses of dogs, chickens, and ducks were dumped along with garbage, causing stagnation in the canal and affecting the living environment of the surrounding households.

Ms. Dau Thi Van, whose house is next to the siphon, said: "Around noon on March 31st, I smelled an unusual foul odor. When I went to check the canal bank, I found two pig carcasses along with some dogs, chickens, and ducks floating in the culvert. For the past few days, the people of Quynh Van have been very upset because they have repeatedly discovered animal carcasses being illegally dumped into the canals, so I reported it to the commune for environmental remediation."

Present with reporters at the site where more dead pigs were discovered, Mr. Nguyen The Lai - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Van commune - said: "The local authorities suspect there is an outbreak of disease in the area or in neighboring communes such as Quynh Thach, Quynh Hau, and Quynh Xuan ward (Hoang Mai town), which is why so many animal carcasses have been illegally dumped into the canal."

Currently, the commune is carrying out the vaccination of livestock for the Spring 2017 season according to the plan of the District People's Committee. Therefore, veterinary officers and village heads from 20 hamlets will coordinate to inspect and count the number of pigs in each household and report promptly to the commune to monitor any households with unusually low pig numbers in order to detect outbreaks early.

The commune will also direct 20 hamlets to report instances of illegal dumping of pig carcasses to raise public awareness, and will offer a reward to anyone who discovers individuals or organizations illegally dumping pig carcasses into the environment.

In addition, the commune has reported the incident to the District People's Committee and proactively contacted the leaders of the irrigation enterprise to take measures to retrieve and bury the two pig carcasses, as the previous incident of allowing them to be swept away by the open sluice gates cannot be allowed to continue.

Also on the morning of April 1st, Mr. Ho Dai, from Hamlet 9, Quynh Van commune, whose house is near the N28 canal, said: "Around 7 am, two irrigation workers used poles to push a pig carcass out of the culvert, allowing it to drift towards the Quynh Bang commune watershed."
