Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular type of battery today, used in devices from laptops, smartphones to electric vehicles... but have the limitation of posing a risk of fire and explosion. The "father" of this type of battery has just continued to invent a new type of battery, which is not only more durable but also eliminates the risk of fire and explosion in batteries.

John Goodenough, 94 years old, professor at the University of Texas (USA), is a name that may be quite unfamiliar to many people, but he is the co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, a type of battery commonly used today, from mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets to electric cars, game consoles...

Not stopping there, at the age of 94, Professor Goodenough, along with his colleague Maria Helena Braga and a group of scientists from the University of Texas, invented a new battery technology to replace lithium-ion batteries, which not only has the advantage of faster charging, longer life but is especially safer.

This new battery technology is called solid-state battery, meaning it does not use liquid chemicals inside the battery, it will replace the liquid electrolyte inside the battery with glass, which according to the development team, will help the battery to operate in low temperature conditions (because it does not freeze), has a lifespan 3 times longer and especially will never explode like current lithium-ion batteries.

Another benefit of the new battery technology being researched by Goodenough’s team is that it replaces lithium with sodium as the main material in the battery. Although lithium is not particularly rare or difficult to find, lithium is still harder to find than sodium, which can be easily extracted from seawater. So the new battery technology promises to be cheaper than today’s lithium-ion batteries.

Currently, this new battery technology is still in the development stage. In fact, new battery ideas or technologies that are expected to create a revolution in recent years are not suitable for the real world or are not practical for production, but with the participation of John Goodenough, one of the pioneers in battery technology development, this new battery technology is promised to become a reality in the future.

Even if Goodenough’s new battery technology becomes a reality, it will still take a long time to be put into actual production. Previously, lithium-ion batteries took more than a decade from Goodenough’s invention to be commercialized and widely used as they are today.
