Funeral service promotion for elderly people who have given up driving.

Elderly people who voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses will receive a 15% discount on service fees at Hwinkaku, a company that operates 89 funeral homes in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

A Kyodo News report shows that the number of accidents caused by drivers over 75 has nearly doubled in the last 10 years. Many accidents are caused by drivers confusing the brake pedal with the accelerator pedal. It is estimated that there are currently around 4.8 million drivers aged 75 and older, and that number is even higher in rural areas.

Subsequently, the government implemented a plan to offer discounted prices on soup, noodles, ramen, and groceries to senior citizens who surrendered their driver's licenses. This plan was very successful, and the funeral discount program was continued.

The funeral company said they are working with the police to bring this promotion to prefectures outside of Aichi.

Police believe that reducing funeral costs is the perfect way to completely end accidents caused by elderly people who are unable to drive properly.

This service has sparked mixed reactions on the Japan Today website.

Many people think this plan is like encouraging the elderly to die. “I don’t understand who came up with this idea? I’m sure giving away free bags of rice would be more helpful.”

However, many people also agree with this. "Why miss out on a 15% discount on funeral services?"
