What's new in Sao Mai 2017?

After 10 seasons, the national television singing contest Sao Mai 2017 is returning with the preliminary round taking place from May 20 to June 30 in provinces and cities across the country.

Compared to 2015, the current regulations and rules for the 2017 exam season have only one new point: the age of participation is extended by 1 year: candidates must be Vietnamese citizens or Vietnamese citizens with foreign nationality living in the country, aged 17 - 27 (born from 1990 - 2000).

In addition, for foreign candidates, in special cases the Organizing Committee will make specific decisions (According to the Regulations).

Round 1 will be conducted by radio and television stations in provinces and cities nationwide from May 20 to June 30. In foreign countries, there will be a preliminary round in which candidates will send recordings and resumes with personal photos to the Organizing Committee.

Accordingly, each province and city will be able to select up to 3 candidates to participate in the Regional Finals.

For Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and foreign areas, the number of candidates will be decided by the Organizing Committee based on the actual situation of each organization.

Round 2: Regional Finals are expected to be held from the end of July. The Regional Finals will be broadcast on VTV6.

Round 3: The national final is scheduled to take place in September in Thanh Hoa and will be broadcast live on VTV6 channel.

Each contestant is only allowed to register for one region. In this qualifying round, each contestant in the following styles: Classical Chamber Music, Folk Music and Light Music is allowed to register 3 songs in one musical performance style (songs permitted for circulation by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, including foreign songs with Vietnamese lyrics).

For candidates who choose to perform foreign songs or exclusive songs, the legality and copyright ownership of the song must be ensured.

This year, there are expected to be awards: First, Second, Third for each musical style; Most favorite contestant voted by the audience.

In addition, there may be a special Jury prize and in exceptional cases, due to the quality of the competition, there may be no First Prize.

With the desire to maintain and promote the singing movement nationwide and the Vietnamese community living and working in Europe, the criteria of the Festival is to discover voices that are truly convincing in terms of expertise and art, and in the 2017 season, the program hopes to continue to find many promising and bright faces in all 3 musical styles.
