Saving a pig kills a... poultry!

May 21, 2017 07:50

Results of the total pig rescue: The total pig herd still has far more supply than demand, and more poultry and other agricultural products are appearing on the market that need to be involved.

Eat a lot of pork, don't eat chicken or duck

The deputy general director of a large livestock company in Dong Nai texted: “Now the price of poultry products is miserable again. In Hanoi, the price of white chicken at the farm is 17,000 VND/kg, duck is 19,000 VND, chicken eggs are 900 - 1,000 VND/egg. Farmers are suffering heavy losses again... Talking more over the phone, he said the fault was... the pigs. Because the whole society rushed to rescue pigs, poultry received little attention, few people bought them, so supply exceeded demand, prices fell.

The rescue is nothing compared to the total herd of 1.7 million pigs that Dong Nai just announced.

At first, it seems absurd because pigs and poultry have their own consumption segments, those who like pigs eat pigs, those who like chickens eat chickens, how can they give up their preferences overnight. However, in reality, the pig rescue campaign mobilized the entire political system to participate, making many people feel sorry and buy pork to rescue. And so, the meal also had less chicken, duck, and eggs.

The evidence is that in Ho Chi Minh City, before, the average daily consumption was only about 10,000 pigs, but in the past two weeks, the amount of pigs consumed has skyrocketed to 15,000, 17,000. An Ha slaughterhouse in Cu Chi used to slaughter a maximum of 4,000 pigs per night to supply the city market, but in the past half month, it has increased to approximately 6,000 pigs. However, it is still not possible to solve the surplus of pigs, but only the chickens and ducks suffer.

Compared to poultry products, the reduction in pork prices has significantly stimulated the consumption of this item. Previously, because pork was expensive, kitchens had to use poultry, which cost an average of 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg depending on the time, but now they can buy wholesale pork at agricultural wholesale markets at similar prices. Compared to poultry, pork is still tastier, so it makes sense that kitchens are not interested in poultry products.

Some places like Dong Nai even call for slaughtering and selling pork directly to industrial zones at prices 30-40% cheaper than the market, causing poultry to be abandoned. In rural areas, pork is even cheaper, many families pool money to buy pigs to slaughter, share them for the whole week, the whole month, so chicken, duck meat, and poultry eggs accidentally become victims of surplus like pigs.

Was the pig really rescued?

The answer is no. The recent increase in demand by a few percent is completely meaningless to rescue the pig herd that is currently in excess. The dangerous thing is that along with the information that this place, that place, this agency, that organization has ways to rescue pork, on online forums and in newspapers, pork prices are also increasing again.

It must be said that this is incorrect information because in reality, the price of live pigs nationwide has not improved much compared to before. Recently, the price of live pigs has only fluctuated from 17,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, and has not increased to 30,000 VND as widely reported in the press. Pig farmers across the country are still struggling with their pigs and are desperately looking for an outlet.

Through monitoring, the source of information about the increase in pork prices mainly comes from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Dong Nai Livestock Association. In particular, the Dong Nai Livestock Association has recently directly purchased pigs from its members at a higher price than the market, then slaughtered them and opened retail stores to sell them to consumers at a price 30-40% cheaper than the market. This is a good way to attract the attention of consumers.

However, the association’s continuous announcement that its work contributed to the increase in pig prices in the area is baseless and inaccurate, because the reality is that pig prices in Dong Nai are still very low. Therefore, pig farmers need to realize that this association only captures pigs from a few farms, which is not much compared to the total herd of 1.7 million pigs that Dong Nai recently announced.
